Snæfellsnes Peninsula Tour
Head west with us on a full-day journey to Snæfellsnes — often called "Iceland in Miniature" for the sheer range of landscape packed into one peninsula. Lunar lava fields, a glacier-capped volcano, black sand beaches and a seal colony all lie within a single day's reach of Reykjavík. Our small-group minibus covers all of it, with a knowledgeable local driver-guide narrating the legends behind each stop.
The Experience
Snæfellsjökull
We drive west out of Reykjavík toward the magnificent Snæfellsjökull, a glacier-capped stratovolcano that took center stage in Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth. On a clear day, its ice cap is visible glittering across the bay from Reykjavík itself.
Ytri-Tunga
Our first stop holds a surprise — a beautiful beach just beside a working farm, home to a seal colony. Your guide will lead you to where they're most often found, resting on the rocks.
A Farm Lunch
We continue to one of our favourite farms on the peninsula, where a home-cooked meal is always guaranteed — included in your tour, and a highlight in its own right.
Búðakirkja
We stop at the striking black church of Búðir, set within the Búðahraun lava field. One of the few black churches in Iceland, it's coated in pitch to protect the wood from the country's harsh climate — the current building dates to 1848, on the site of a turf chapel that stood from 1703. Its natural harbour once made Búðir the peninsula's most important trading post, during the Danish trade monopoly of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Arnarstapi & Djúpalónssandur
The dramatic coast of Arnarstapi is next, where relentless waves have carved impressive cliffs and rock arches — here we'll also meet the statue of Bárður Snæfellsás, the mythical guardian of the peninsula. We continue to the black sand beach of Djúpalónssandur, where the scattered remains of a 1948 shipwreck still lie, and four lifting stones of different sizes once tested — and paid — the strength of the fishermen who worked here.
Kirkjufell & Berserkjahraun
We stop to admire Kirkjufell, probably the most photographed mountain in Iceland — ringed by streams and small waterfalls, and known to Game of Thrones viewers as the "Arrowhead Mountain." On the way back we pass through the Berserkjahraun lava field, formed some 4,000 years ago, thick and dramatic — with a Viking-age saga of its own.
