Hvammsvík Hot Springs — Natural Pools on a Quiet Fjord

On the shore of Hvalfjörður, the whale fjord, eight natural hot pools sit right at the water's edge. Some change with every tide; one disappears completely at high water. Hvammsvík is wilder and quieter than the big lagoons — just warm water, sea air and mountains.

The Experience

01

The Pools

Eight pools of different sizes and temperatures are spread along the shoreline, fed by natural hot springs. Move from one to the next, cool off in the fjord if you dare, and warm up again.

02

Shaped by the Tide

Hvammsvík's pools sit so close to the sea that the tide plays a part: at high tide seawater mixes into the lower pools, and one is swallowed completely, only to reappear as the water drops.

03

Fjord and Mountains

Hvammsvík sits on a quiet fjord with mountains in every direction — far from the tour-bus crowds. The drive along Hvalfjörður is beautiful in its own right.
