Whale Watching from Reykjavík

Faxaflói Bay, right off Reykjavík's Old Harbour, is one of the few places in the world where a capital city and a genuine whale feeding ground sit side by side. Sail out with an experienced local crew and scan the water for blows, dorsal fins and — if you're lucky — a full breach, with warm overalls provided for the whole trip.

The Experience

01

Departure from the Old Harbour

Boats leave right from Reykjavík's Old Harbour, a short walk from most downtown hotels. Check in at least 30 minutes before departure — warm, waterproof overalls are provided, since the open water is considerably colder than the city streets.

On the Water

Once out in Faxaflói Bay, the crew works the boat toward recent sightings, watching for blows and fins on the horizon. Guides share running commentary on the whales, dolphins and seabirds around you, and there's open deck space for photos whenever something surfaces.

What You Might See

Minke and humpback whales are the most frequent sightings in the bay, alongside playful white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. Seabirds — including puffins in summer — are common too. Sightings are never guaranteed, but summer success rates on this route run around 90%, and most operators offer a free repeat trip if nothing is spotted.

Good to Know

Dress warmly in layers underneath the overalls provided, and bring seasickness tablets if you're prone to motion sickness — conditions on the bay can shift quickly. Summer departures sell out early, so book ahead.
